In the past, dams were built on the Ipoly River, creating a huge difference in level in the riverbed and preventing fish from passing through. Therefore, in the mid-2000s, the river was made “gradual” sloping by staggering small pools in the riverbed next to the dams. The resultant smaller difference in level and slower flow allows fish and other aquatic life to migrate freely up and down the river to natural spawning grounds. At the fish ladders, you can observe the river’s rich fauna.
